Cliff Ferrall – 100 years old!

Cliff Ferrall was born on 31 July 1909.

On 31 July 2009 he celebrated his 100th birthday at the Coober Pedy Hospital with family, friends and nursing and aged care staff.

Cliff’s nephew Ron Ferrall and his wife Laura came from Queensland.

Thelma Ferrall, aged 88, (Cliff’s sister-in-law by marriage to Cliff’s deceased brother Lyle Ferrall) was unable to make the long trip from Brisbane.

Mayor Steve Baines handed Cliff congratulatory letters from the Queen, the Governor-General Quentin Bryce, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, Leader of the Opposition Malcolm Turnbull, SA Premier Mike Rann, Federal Member for Grey Rowan Ramsey and State Member for Giles Lyn Breuer.

Cliff read out aloud to everyone - without glasses – all the birthday wishes.

“How did they know all this?” he said. “I believe in fairies at the bottom of the garden now.”

Of the wording of Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s letter Cliff said, “Typical politician!”

He had a drink of beer and said, “This is better than all your water.”

Apology

In the Coober Pedy News issue of 30 July on page 2 in the article headed Development Assessment Panel July Meeting, in the second line in column 2, the word "illegally" was used, in the sentence beginning at the bottom of column 1, "The Panel deferred a decision on Lot 1916, and directed the Council to ask Mr Riches to write to the owner of Lot 1917 and ask him to either remove illegally parked machinery, or put in a development application."

The Coober Pedy News wishes to apologise for the use of the word "illegally".

The sentence should read: "The Panel deferred a decision on Lot 1916, and directed the Council to ask Mr Riches to write to the owner of Lot 1917 and ask him to either remove machinery, or put in a development application."

The Coober Pedy News apologises for any distress caused by the inclusion of the word.

Runaway Plane Crashes

At about 10:00am on Tuesday the 4th of August 2009, Police were tasked to the Coober Pedy Airport regarding a plane crash.  Local CFS, SES also attended and on arrival police ascertained that a pilot was working outside on his single engine plane when the plane suddenly took off un-piloted.  The plane sped off at a high speed across the air strip and eventually nose planted into a ditch.  The plane was completely written off and there were no injuries etc.

Service providers leaving the scene of the upturned plane, about 300 metres from the terminal, in a ditch. Only  the top of a police vehicle can be seen where the plane finished up.

The runaway plane incident featured in the South African newspaper "The Mercury", saying that the Australian pilot who forgot to put the chocks under the wheels of his aircraft when he cranked its propeller saw it take off without him and that. "unable to start the Cessna, he spun the propeller by hand, but was now quick enough clambering aboard."

Hutchison Street Cameras - update supplied by Trevor McLeod, CEO, DCCP

1. All the cameras are working in Hutchison Street.

2. They are not monitored 24/7 and that was always going to be the case as neither we nor the Police have the resources available.  I am aware that they do check the monitor/s from time to time, as we do.

The Police will in most instances rely upon communication from a member of the public if there is a breach of the peace or other anti-social behaviour taking place in Hutchison Street

3. There is a Memorandum Of  Understanding in place between Council and SAPOL as to the manner in which each will work with the other with regard to the operation of the CCTV system.

4. As far as Council is concerned there are limited senior personnel who are able to monitor the CCTV system.  If any live incident is observed at the time of viewing then the Police are notified.  The manner in which the Police handle their staff is their concern.  We are able to search for images of any incident that may have occurred.

5. A camera is directed towards the Westpac Bank, which includes the area of trees on the corner of Hutchison Street and Bank Place.  The camera aiming east along Halliday Place could do with a slight re-alignment to hopefully incorporate the area you identify. Unfortunately they are fixed cameras and you just can't get everything.

6. Council has purchased 2 PTZ (Pan Tilt Zoom) and 2 fixed cameras, all of which will be installed shortly.  The PTZ cameras will allow for a greater area to be viewed, as well as magnify images.
