The worst is probably over

After a full day of soft, slow, 'heavy drizzle' the ground everywhere was saturated. Lots of very sticky mud, humidity very high, but no real problems. Then came a few heavy showers which ran straight off the top of the saturated ground and caused some concern that things could get serious if the heavy showers continued.

But it hasn't happened. It's been fine and overcast for quite a few hours and the likelihood of more heavy showers is diminishing as the hours go by.

Many people cannot use their driveways so they have to walk from the road to the dugout or house. Some town dirt roads can only be negotiated with difficulty. Some dugouts have had minor water damage.

It looks like it's time to start cleaning up, and hopefully the threat of serious flooding for the town of Coober Pedy is over.

REX REDUCES FUEL SURCHARGE

Australia’s largest regional airline Regional Express (Rex) announced on 16 January  that it would be

reducing its fuel surcharge to $24 per sector inclusive of GST.

Rex’s Managing Director, Geoff Breust, said the recent fall in the barrel price and the price

ex Singapore had led to reduced jet fuel prices flowing through to the airlines.

"The reduction in the surcharge to $24.00 per sector brings it in line with the revised

surcharge of QantasLink regional services, even though Rex does not have the buying

power of a large international airline like Qantas," Mr Breust said.

The surcharge reduction will apply to all tickets issued on or after 23 January 2007.

"Rex will continue to monitor the price of fuel and respond with appropriate changes to the

fuel surcharge as and when necessary," Mr Breust said.

REX has upgraded all its services to/from Coober Pedy to SAAB aircraft.
