If you happen to request a fax of a copy of an agreement to purchase an opal mine sub-lease in Coober Pedy through this site, this is what you will read in the first three paragraphs:

The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) today obtained orders in the Federal Court, by consent, permanently restraining Mr Noel Frederick Smith and his wife, Mrs Barbara Ann Smith from engaging in any conduct that amounts to aiding, abetting, counselling, or procuring Mr Maxwell John Reid from managing corporations whilst disqualified.

Mr Reid, who is disqualified from managing corporations by order of the Federal Court until 10 August 2036, failed to attend Court for today's hearing and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

This action follows the commencement of contempt proceedings on 17 November 2003 against Mr Reid in which ASIC has alleged that he took part in the management of Battstone Australia Pty Ltd (In Liquidation) and Australian Marble Pty Ltd (In Liquidation).


ASIC obtained interim injunctions on 23 December 2003 after alleging that Mr Reid, Mr and Mrs Smith and others were involved in attempts by International Meats Pty Ltd and Adelaide Granites Pty Ltd to purchase two other companies.

'ASIC has taken this action to prevent people acting as directors of companies managed by Mr Reid, on the basis that Mr Reid is an unfit person to be involved in the management of corporations. The Federal Court's 44 year banning of Mr Reid in 1992 from involvement in the management of companies demonstrates his appalling corporate governance record', ASIC Deputy Executive Director of Enforcement, Mr Mark Steward said."

An internet search on the State of Nevada Secretary of State website reveals that Australian Opal Mining & Holdings, Inc. is located on File Number C19232-2001, incorporated on July 17, 2001.
The Resident Agent is ACORN CORPORATE SERVICES INC, 3225 S McLeod Dr #110, Las Vegas, Nevada. The President is Maxwell John Reid, address 3225 McLeod S100, Las Vegas, Nevada; Secretary Christopher D Corsi, 3225 Mcleod S100, Las Vegas, Nevada; Treasurer D Craig Bunker, 3225 McLeod S100, Las Vegas, Nevada.

At a dinner and auction held in the Serbian Orthodox hall in Coober Pedy $3413.20 was raised, and was deposited in the Oxfam bank account.

Coober Pedy Mayor Steve Baines says in a letter to Graham Gunn MP,
"We fully support the introduction of a 130km/h maximum speed limit on the road between Port Augusta and the NT border, and firmly believe this is a sensible and common sense approach. The Stuart Highway north of Port Augusta to the Northern Territory border is a magnificently wide, long and well maintained stretch of road that can easily and safely accommodate speeds of up to 130km/h. The majority of vehicles that travel this road are also built to safely accommodate these speeds."
