Extracts from the District Council Agenda for May
From the Mayor's Report
Councillors would have noticed the presence of a marked security car and two uniformed security personnel operating between May 4 and 9. I have been speaking with the management of City Safe for some time now with the view of trying to implement something similar to that which is operating in Port Augusta. City Safe agreed to do a trial in the main street at their expense, but on behalf of Council, to gauge the response.
Public and business response has been extremely positive. City Safe will now make a formal approach to Council in the not too distant future, at which time we can consider the idea further.

From the Works Manager's Report
Roadsweeper: Trials were conducted with a Scarab Minor sweeper from ROSMECH in Adelaide. I found that this machine did not suit our needs due to excessive dust emission and inability to cope with the volume of silt built up on our roads plus it did not successfully recover aggregate from freshly sealed roads.
Greg Bains from Sweeper Technologies in Victoria has agreed to come here and demonstrate a larger capacity TYMCO 300 regenerative sweeper (exhaust blast is fed back into suction inlet and uses a cyclonic dust separation system). Hopefully this machine will prove more suitable to our conditions. The purchase price is the same as the Scarab Minor - $60,000 + GST. Our mechanic will carry out a comprehensive inspection of the unit and give a report.

From the Building Surveyor's ReportDuring my latest visit I was informed of a site where dozens of car bodies were being deposited. I contacted the owner, PLT Chignola, who verbally advised me that he is doing a clean up around the town. He is picking up as many old cars as he can, at no cost. His intention is to collect 400 vehicles at which time Sims Metal will come with their presser and take them all away. Apparently he only needs another 100 and expects to have them all removed by Christmas.
Mr Chignola stated that the removal of the old wrecks is improving the appearance of the town and money he makes from this process will be donated to the Tsunami relief appeal.

Development (Sustainable Development) Amendment Bill
"This bill was released for public comment last year and report to Council on April 20, 2004. It has now been introduced into Parliament."
I am now aware of any formal advice being sent to those who commented on the original Bill nor if any opportunity exists for amendments to be made. It appears the Government has its own agenda and is not willing to listen to those affected by the change - particularly those outside the metro area.
The main issue which will be almost impossible for many Councils to comply with is the requirement for every Council to establish development assessment panels.

.........
In a brief forum in the Council chambers, Cr Paul Athanasiadis told Hon. Paul Holloway, MLC, Minister for Urban Development and Planning, that Council would be stressed to have to pay for all the proposed development assessment panel members. Mr Holloway said in reply that the Government would be flexible in its attitude to the responsibility of the councils in this regard.

Hon. Paul Holloway, MLC, Minister for Mineral Resources Development, and Lyn Breuer, Member for Giles, were present to witness the rig in operation on Tom's Working Mine.
They also met with NoPokies4CooberPedy committee members.
Mr Holloway explained how difficult it would be for Parliament to re-visit legislation concerning the placing of poker machines in regional centres.

From left: Financial Counsellor Kevin Woon and Cr Boro Rapaic (NoPokies4CooberPedy), Paul Holloway MP, Lyn Breuer MP.
Lyn Breuer told the committee that she thought No Pokies MP Nick Xenophon had "sold you a pup", and was "using you".
John Kruse, an 'adherent' of the NoPokies4CooberPedy campaign disagreed and defended Mr Xenophon's involvement with the campaign.
