Coober Pedy’s 36th Annual Race Meeting

From Peter Rowe, President, CPARC

This year’s Races are building to be a great family weekend event on the 6th & 7th of August as the Races return to a picnic race format with an emphasis on family fun for both children and adults.

Children’s novelty fun, foot races, egg tossing, potato races, barrel races, motor cycle and more will keep children entertained throughout the weekend.

The races will now be open to all horses including hack and corn-fed, which basically means that "anyone with a horse and a saddle will be able to compete.

Once again there will be the usual Gymkhana events for both the children and adults and along with the prize money and incentives of $15,000 it is sure to attract strong competition, bring out the best in the riders and make for an exciting race weekend.

This year the riders in the motorbike gymkhana events will be competing for prize money over $1300 so all you budding motor cycle riders in Coober Pedy come along and have a go.

Many thanks to all the businesses in town who have once again dug deep to support Coober Pedy’s longest running event. There has been an increase in community support this year with a number of new faces turning up to committee meetings which is really encouraging.

ABC radio personality Peter Goers will be officially opening the Races on Saturday afternoon. Goers has been a strong supporter of Coober Pedy and his character and wit will be appreciated at the event. He is one of the first media people to respond to positive stories about our town, and certainly one of the strongest positive voices in times of need.

A new promotional brochure has been produced by the Coober Pedy Retail Business and Tourism Association and distributed to the SA Tourism Commission, RAA, Wadlata and to tourism operators around Coober Pedy.

For further information go to www.opalcapitaloftheworld.com or contact the SA Travel Centre, RAA or Wadlata or Freecall 1800 637 076, or contact any member of the race club, or Ross Sawers on 8672 5579.

Martin Smith, Coordinator of the Opal Festival, advises that he has received notice that his application to the South Australian Tourism Commission for $13.000 for Marketing Purposes has resulted in a grant of $4,000. The festival will be held at Easter, Saturday April 15, 2006.

The "Back to Mintabie Reunion" will be held from Friday 30th September to Sunday 2nd October 2005.

A Carrot, an Egg and a Cup of Coffee - How do you deal with adversity?

A girl was telling her mother about the troubles in her life. The mother put three pots of water on to boil and placed inside each one either a carrot, an egg or coffee beans. She explained that each of these objects faced the same adversity - boiling water. Each reacted differently.

The carrot went in hard, strong and unrelenting. However, after being subjected to the boiling water it softened and became weak. The egg had been fragile. Its outer shell had protected its liquid interior, but after going through the boiling water its inside became hardened. The coffee beans were unique - after they had been in the boiling water they had changed the water.

"Which are you?" she asked her daughter, "the carrot, the egg, or the coffee beans?"
