Choose cards to make a difference

If you're yet to purchase Christmas cards, why not choose cards that will make a difference?

The Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children (RIDBC) has a great Christmas catalogue for 2005 including cards for private and corporate buyers.

With the help of volunteers who pack and ship the cards, even more of the purchase price comes back to RIDBC, to help provide a wide range of educational programs for children with hearing or vision impairment.

As one of Australia's oldest charities, RIDBC relies heavily on community support to continue its programs.

To order your cards, please phone the Christmas Card Hotline on 1800 111 474, or order online at www.ridbc.org.au.

For media inquiries please contact Janet Granger-Wilcox on 9872 0334 or 0409 029 298. More information about the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children can be found at www.ridbc.org.au.

This wife is too jealous

There was once a wife so jealous that when her husband came home one night and she couldn't find hairs on his jackets she yelled at him, "Great, so now you're cheating on me with a bald woman!"

The next night, when she didn't smell any perfume, she yelled again by saying, "She's not only bald, but she's too cheap to buy any perfume

The government cuts costs

The following conversation took place one morning between a wife and her husband. They were discussing government cost cuts that they recently heard about in the paper.

"Steve," his wife said, while reading the newspaper, "it looks like our government is going to cut overhead and trim down the military forces. They are going to eliminate six overaged destroyers."

To which the husband replies, "Sorry to hear that, dear. I'm sure you'll miss your mother being gone."

The End of Rapier

By Lt Mike Squire

For 25 years, the men of 110th Air Defence Battery have been firing their Rapier Surface to Air Missiles over Lake Hart, with the last being fired on November 3. More than 300 people, including some of the Army's highest ranking officers, converged on Woomera to conduct the final Rapier Live Fire. All stood quietly, reflecting on 25 years of memories, as the last missile hurtled across Lake Hart towards its target. The a cheer rang out and the men returned to their base camp for a 'wake' and to spin some years about their service within the battery.

It was a fitting end to what has been one of the most important capabilities in the Australian Defence Force. For 25 years Rapier has provided highly capable Ground Based Air Defence and has ensured the requirement for technically minded operators.

The Rapier provided an all-weather day/night capability that could engage hostile aircraft at ranges of 8km. The equipment had undergone several upgrades throughout its 25 years, but having fulfilled its time-of-life, was retired from service.

The Battery will re-equip itself with the SAAB-Bofors RBS-70 Surface to Air Missile system in 2006, so don't be surprised to see a new missile hurtling across Lake Hart.

Oxiana to Release Shares Held in Escrow

The Australian Stock Exchange was notified by letter on 22 November by Company Secretary David J Forsyth

"Dear Sir,

Notice of Shares to be Released from Voluntary Escrow

We refer to our advice on 26 July 2005 wherein 81.5 million shares, issued to Newmont Capital Pty Ltd as part consideration for the Golden Grove acquisition, had been placed in voluntary escrow for a six month period, until 26 January 2006, and could not be transferred during that period to an unrelated third party without Oxiana's consent.

Newmont has requested early release of these shares from voluntary escrow and has proposed that these shares be placed with mainly offshore institutional investors in North America, Europe and Asia.

Oxiana has today agreed to that request for escrow release.

Yours Sincerely,

David J Forsyth
Company Secretary"
