Dear Editor

Our talk back radio here in the West, are bombarded with strong support for the unions slant on Industrial Relations where they  paint horror stories of poor people like the young girl who is told if she doesn’t work for low wages she will have to go. Or the women who has sick children and is told she has to choose between job and family.  I’m sure that many people may not have the same admiration for the leaders of unions who have become very wealthy entrepreneurs in their so called fight for the working man.

People like my husband who employ 20 men in the construction industry know that if you don’t look after your workers you won’t survive, industrial relations had to be reformed or you would have seen small business fall apart and the big boy’s take over, like we saw with our manufacturing, and industrial industries, that because of union intervention found it all to hard and moved their companies overseas, is this another unions agenda for small business who are struggling to survive.

Where is the fair go when you can’t pay an achiever more than a non achiever, if you employ some no hoper you can’t dismiss him without going though lengthy red tape at a huge cost to the employer, unfair dismissal is a joke. Last month one of our men, who we took on as a junior and trained, gave us 5 minute notice before he left. I wonder if unions and their supporters would embrace regulations that allowed for business people to sue the employee for leaving without due notice.  No, because they have forgotten that our country was made great, by people who believed in a fair go, and work ethics, not just for the employee but also the employer.

My husband works 14 hours a day 6 days a week, our men don’t’ work these hours, but we make sure they are well paid often taking home more than the boss who has put a huge investment  to keep the business going.

We reflect the large percentage of small business out their, who are loyal and care about the people we employ and should not have useless stupid laws that inhibit growth and cause a “them and us” within the workforce, just because unions need to justify their existence by exposing the exploits of a small percentage of unethical people.

Yours truly,

Margie Bass

HORTICULTURE CODE OF CONDUCT MUST APPLY ACROSS ENTIRE SECTOR

The proposed horticulture code of conduct will be anti-competitive if not applied across the entire

industry.

The Federal Government’s proposed mandatory horticulture code of conduct risks encouraging anti-competitive

behaviour if it does not apply across the entire horticulture industry, the Central Markets

Association of Australia (CMAA) said today.

The code is being introduced by the Government following a grower-led call for a mandatory code of

conduct for the fruit and vegetable industry.

However growers across Australia believe the code should apply across the entire sector, not only to those

wholesalers operating from the central markets.

In a recent survey conducted by Roy Morgan Research commissioned by the Brisbane Markets, 72 per cent

of respondents strongly agreed major retail market chains should be governed by the proposed code.

"If the Government decides to only regulate the central markets, they will be handing a competitive

advantage to the major retailers in this country and the ability to peruse an even greater slice of the market

than they already enjoy," said Andrew Young, CMAA spokesperson.
