Snakes wake as weather breaks

The gorgeous weather is a sure sign that spring is here, but it also means that the more slithery inhabitants of our gardens and open spaces will soon be on the move.

Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources Manager of Animal Welfare Dr Deb Kelly said the start of spring was a timely reminder to clean up yards before snake season began in earnest.

"Snakes are dormant over winter, so their metabolism slows down and they use next to no energy," Dr Kelly said.

"In early spring, they emerge to warm up in the sun. They will also have food on their minds, having not eaten for several months, and this will make them more active and less wary of humans.

"When we had a few warmer days last month, the first snakes began to appear, prompting some early calls to snake catchers.

"Snakes are common in both the metropolitan and regional areas, so don’t think that just because you’re at the beach or in the suburbs you won’t see one.

"They like quiet places where they won’t be disturbed, such as long grass, wood heaps and piles of rubbish and building materials like corrugated iron.

"These places also encourage rats and mice, which are snakes’ main prey animals, so it’s a sensible idea to clean up yards and sheds and control vermin, no matter where you live."

Snakes are protected under the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972.

The most common venomous snakes found in South Australian residential areas are eastern browns, red-bellied blacks, copperheads, western browns and tiger snakes.

Dr Kelly said they represented an important part of the ecosystem and helped to keep down rodent numbers.

"Most snake bites happen when people are either trying to catch or kill a snake, so it’s best to keep your distance," she said.

"If you see a snake on your property, keep children and pets away and call a snake catcher. They’re under ‘S’ in the Yellow Pages.

"If a person or an animal is bitten by a snake, seek immediate attention from a doctor or vet."
