Kevin Rudd should do his science homework

“Kevin Rudd’s new support for same-sex marriage shows he does not understand science,” FamilyVoice research officer Ros Phillips said today.
“For example, Mr Rudd wrongly claims that the ‘near universal findings of biological research for most of the post war period is that… a certain proportion of the community is born gay’. No reputable geneticist believes this.
“Studies of identical twins show that where one twin is homosexual, the other is heterosexual in over 85% of cases – even though each has the same genes and hormone exposure in the womb.
“Clearly, no one is ‘born gay’.
It is life experiences – which may occur at a very young age and be different for different people – that determine same-sex attraction,” Ros Phillips said.
“Moreover authoritative longitudinal studies show that most young people who are same-sex attracted in their teens no longer have those feelings a decade later.
“Kevin Rudd needs to take a crash course in Scientific Method 101: All test groups should be selected randomly (ie not volunteers) and matched with controls who are the same in every respect except the feature being tested. Both groups should be independently assessed.
“Mr Rudd ignores these fundamental principles when claiming that children raised by same-sex couples do as well as those in other types of families.
He cites a longitudinal study of US lesbian couple families, but apparently does not realise that the lesbians:
• were volunteers, recruited from gay and lesbian venues
• knew the study’s political implications
• did their own reports on the progress of their children, who were not assessed by independent observers
• were mostly college-educated, with over 80% in professional or managerial roles, and almost entirely Caucasian
• were compared with a control group with much lower educational and employment levels, randomly selected from the general US population.
“Amazingly, this flawed study’s conclusion – that children raised by lesbian couples are better adjusted, with higher educational achievement and fewer behavioural problems – has been cited as a major reason for redefining marriage.
Fortunately, most modern science adheres to higher standards - otherwise we would still be driving around in horse-drawn buggies and computers would be a pipe-dream.
“The reality is that valid research with properly matched controls and independent assessment shows that children do best when raised by their two natural married parents.”
Ros Phillips said Kevin Rudd should have another look at his Bible. Jesus affirmed the words of Genesis chapters 1 and 2, saying In the beginning the Creator made them male and female and said,
‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife and the two will become one flesh’.
“Marriage is an age-old recognition that children are best raised by their natural parents with both male and female role models in a committed environment,” Ros Phillips said.
“Governments did not invent marriage, and they cannot change its natural, fundamental meaning of a man-woman union.”

Mt Woods Exploration Work Plan agreed

OZ Minerals proposes $2.6 million of copper-gold exploration work at Mt Woods during 2013-14

IMX has provided updated information on the progress of its exploration joint venture with OZ Minerals Limited (‘OZ Minerals’), known as the Mt Woods Copper-Gold Joint Venture Project (the ‘Mt Woods JV’).
In the second half of calendar year 2013, OZ Minerals plans to commence a $2.6 million field program to explore for haematite-hosted iron oxide copper gold deposits, involving 4,300m of diamond core drilling and delineation of targets using detailed ground based gravity and other geophysical surveys, the majority of which is expected to be carried out during the first half of 2014.
Commencement of the exploration work is also subject to receipt of relevant approvals.
The Mt Woods JV’s exploration campaigns are primarily focussed on the Southern Domain of the Mt Woods Inlier, which hosts the western extension of the Prominent Hill Mine sequence of rocks.
IMX Managing Director Neil Meadows commented: “IMX is pleased to be able to confirm the on-going commitment of our joint venture partner OZ Minerals to this program of work and looks forward to the results that will be generated in this fourth year of the overall exploration program.”

Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor
As we approach the end of another financial year we would like to once again remind everyone that June is your last chance to help those doing it tough at the moment, and also get a tax deduction for this financial year.
The number of people who need help in this local community continues to grow each year and Red Cross is finding it harder than ever to attract the support we need to do our work.
You have always been able to trust Red Cross to be there when large-scale disasters strike, but we're also out in your area everyday helping people who are doing it tough.
Red Cross is asking everyone to dig deep before the 30th June to support the everyday work of Red Cross.
Whether it's serving breakfast to children who would otherwise go to school hungry, making sure elderly and frail Australians receive daily phone calls so they can continue to live independently, or helping communities prepare for, respond to and recover from disasters, Red Cross is there providing help where and when it's needed the most.
A tax-deductible gift to the Red Cross Doing it Tough Appeal can make a real difference.
To make a tax deductible donation by June 30 call 1800 811 700 or visit redcross.org.au

Death & Taxes

When John D Rockefeller died in 1937 he was reputedly the richest man in the world.
At his funeral were many of his employees as well as a large contingent from the press.
Spotting Rockefeller’s chief accountant in the crowd, a young journalist from The Washington Post approached the accountant after the funeral.
“Weren’t you Mr Rockefeller’s accountant?” enquired the journalist.
“Yes, I was”, replied the accountant.
“Tell me”, whispered the journalist, “How much did he leave?”
“All of it”, whispered the accountant.
