Port Augusta Police warn of counterfeit currency

Port Augusta Police are reminding local businesses to check cash closely after two reports of counterfeit currency being circulated in the town this year.
Two fake $50 notes have been located at a local supermarket and a service station since January 1.

The notes are dirtier than cash normally is and the hologram window - in particular the stars - have been doctored with what appears to be a substance similar to liquid paper.
Investigations into the origin of the notes are ongoing and police are asking for anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or report online at www.sa.crimestoppers.com.au
“Police are urging all businesses just to take that extra minutes’ notice to check the currency that is entering their tills,” said Sergeant Ben Treloar from Port Augusta Police.
“Any suspicious currency should be reported directly to the Police on 131 444.”
For more information about how to detect counterfeit notes see this information from the Reserve Bank of Australia: http://banknotes.rba.gov.au/counterfeits.html
