Power price parity promise pleases regional business and council

ABC News - By Khama Reid

Power much more expensive for some regions than for city customers (ABC Audience submitted Ilmar Vaim)

Business and tourism interests and local government are pleased the major parties are promising to reduce off-grid power prices in regional South Australia.
Some businesses are paying 110 per cent more than those in city areas.
br> A reduction in a federal subsidy for communities off the national power grid pushed prices higher last year.
The District Council of Coober Pedy and the town's Retail, Business and Tourism Association have been lobbying for a better deal, and Mayor Steve Baines is pleased both major parties are now supporting the idea of pricing parity with city customers.
"We have that commitment in writing from both parties so, yes, we are fairly confident that they will stand by their commitment," he said.
"It's been a long road trying to right this injustice and get equality for the residents of Coober Pedy, so we were extremely happy when we got the commitment from both parties."
Retail, Business and Tourism Association chairman Robert Coro says he hopes changes can be implemented as soon as possible.
"Everyone is quite happy but obviously everyone is also a little bit cautious because we haven't received our first bill at the reduced price yet," he said.
"When that happens we'll probably be very, very happy. "Surely it can't be that difficult to implement a price reduction, I mean price rises don't take that long."
